I've been taking this medication for nerve pain for about a year and a half 300 mg 3 x day so 900 mg daily, and started to take myself off. My doc said I could just quit taking them cold turkey. Tried that and was in hell. Now in hell trying to get back on track but I want to get off of this med. I don't need it anymore, and it causes other issues that I don't need. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE have experience with this med and if so, how long did you take, how long did it take to get off of it, and HOW did you do it? Thank you for any help you can give.

THANK YOU ALL. This is my original "schedule" I was given from a pharmacist the other day. drop to 600 mg or 2 capsules a day for 7 to 10 days, then 300 or one capsule for 7 to 10 days and then every other day? That's obviously too fast? And also please include any and all withdrawals you had in your answer or what your family/friends withdrawals were. B/c I also told my doc what I was feeling on an emergency call and he said there are NO WITHDRAWALS that what I am feeling CANNOT be the neurontin he has NEVER HAD ANYONE have the problems I am having??? Sorry the desperation has set in.

try cutting back to 600mg for one month then cut back to 300mg for a month then cut down to 300mg every other day for a week then every 3 days for a week after that you should be able to stop completely. This is how the doctor weaned my grandma off of the same medicine and it was also what I was told to do if and when my son is removed off of it.

I was taking 1800mg/ day for bipolar disorder, and it was murder trying to get off from it. I reduced my dose by 300 mg at a time per week for a month, and I still had trouble with headaches, irritability, nausea, etc. every time I dropped the dose.
EDIT: Your dr is an ill-informed imbecile.

Abrupt stopping is not recommended. The dose should be gradually tapered. Unfortunately, there's no standard protocol. Decrease by a half-a-tablet a week, such as two-and-a-half a day for a week, two a day for a week, etc.

I hope this helps.

I've been on it, but you must taper off. Go to 2 per day for a week or 2 (preferably 2) then down to 1 per day for 2 weeks ,then ask MD for Rx for 100mg 1 per day 2 weeks, THEN stop.

I would turn dr into medical board. You can't stop neurontin cold turkey. You have to titrate (gradually increase or decrease) when starting or stopping this med.
