the selective service is registration for simply draft. No you do not have to join the military just because you registered. This does affect other things such as student loans, and grants from the government. All federal grants and loans will ask for your selective service registration number, it's best you print out your number, and keep it where you can find it.

I'm guessing you just turned 18. Selective Service is what every male has to do when they turn 18 in case the draft is reinstated. So the only reason you would be going to war if there is a draft.

It's a legal requirment, odds are pretty good you won't go to war unless you enlist, but it definately pertains to the unlikely possibility of a draft. If you aren't afraid to go to war, then you are a better man than me, and I spent ten years in the military.

Selective service is sometimes called the draft. It simply means you are given a number and then there is a lottery conducted by the government. If your number is drawn you have to go into the military. You don't want to go they will come and get you.

It means you are registered to be in the pool of U.S. Citizens that are of eligible age for the armed services draft, if it gets called upon. It is required by law to sign up for it once you reach that age.
The draft has not been activated.
