Socks tend to absorb the sweat from your feet (particularly if they're made from natural fibres) and keep your shoes from getting too stinky

Yes, there is bacteria. Be a good person and go barefoot.
Bacteria needs a warm, dark, moist place to live and breed making shoes the perfect incubator. Feet open to the air will not let bacteria take a good hold on them.

It makes your shoes smell that is for sure. I think your feet would come second.
