Gout is one of the most common forms of arthritis or inflammation of a joint. It most commonly affects the big toe joint (first metatarsophalangeal joint), but can affect any joint. Gout usually starts as an acute attack that often comes on overnight. Within 12-24 hours there is usually severe pain and swelling in the joint.
Gout usually only affects one joint at a time (sometimes two) - most often the feet and ankles. The joint at the base of the big toe is the most common site. If there is no treatment the gout attack usually subsides in a week or so. After the first attack there may be intervals of many months or even years before there are other attacks. Over time these attacks tend to become more frequent and more severe and eventually may involve other and more joints. Eventually, without treatment, a state of chronic or continuous joint symptoms may develop with progressive joint damage.

The cause of gout is related to the physiology of uric acid, which is a chemical that is a natural part of the normal breaking down and building up of food and body tissues. When uric acid levels are higher, this is known as hyperuricaemia. Uric acid is normally dissolved in the blood, but when its high, microscopic crystals may be deposited in the joint. These crystals then set up the acute inflammation causes the gout.

Go and see a doctor and get a blood test that tests for uric acid levels. If these are elevated then more than likely you have gout and you must learn to control it. You are only 30 years old, if it is gout it will only get worse when you get older unless you get on top of it now. I had my first attack at 32 and it took me 8 years to learn how to control it. If you are not happy with a doctors opinion then see a rheumatologist as soon as possible. Pseudo Gout has similar effects as gout but generally only affects older people due to the different crystals ( pseudo has calcium crystals ) It could be Rheumatoid arthritis, so make sure you check with the doctor on this also. I STRESS ON THIS : Always Seek medical advice, get your tests done as soon as possible. Some simple changes in your diet, like adding Apple Cider Vinegar or certain herbs or vitamins can help big time. I have a large site with many articles on Gout to have a look at, it is up to date and all free. Just remember a few things: Gout can be dangerous in the long term if not attended to. Always seek the advice of a medical practitioner. Always check up on the side effects of any drug prescribed to you, as most drugs are synthetic , hence they will have a side effect. Always check with a medical practitioner before taking any drug, herb or magic Gout pill or any other Gout remedy, better safe than sorry.... Gout can be controlled. You just have to learn to understand your body and its acidity. Life is too short to suffer GOUT PAIN.. good luck.

my dad has very bad gout and it affects him mostly in his elbows and knees. From what he has told me, gout is where your joint swells up and there is a lot of pressure and pain.

Too much uric acid in body. Mostly effects big toes, but can effect any joint. You need a blood test to test for uric acid levels. If you have it, low purine diet needed, drs often prescribe allopurinol for it and pain meds.
