Hint: I am a Christian. But I admit, Atheists have a head start on learning most things. Why? They start with "key" number 1.

Dear "kathy" - How do we get that knowledge into our thick heads? What will unlock our receptors? Wisdom, to me is what we do with what we have learned, which means we must learn first. What are the guaranteed approaches that will lead to us learning (anything)? - smiles

Dear "sherl" - Good approaches. For the missing key, ask an old person. Or, think back what you have heard old people say about what they wished they had done in the past.

approaching anything with an open mind.
realizing that we really know very little.
being willing to be humble.
a closed mind allows nothing to enter.
thinking that we know everything leads to learning nothing.
arrogance will keep anyone from teaching you.

Known is a drop, unknown is an ocean. Who knows the Self knows all.
The above quote suggest that knowledge is within. If you can develop an insight into your mind, there is no more secrets. The entire universe becomes an open book.
I am sure you have heard about highly intelligent kids who can perform math or physics calculation designed for college graduates. How is this possible considering the children are just 5 or 6 years old and have never attended school yet? This proves that knowledge exists within us. We just need to know how to unlock it.

Go to school and learn to study just like anyone else this is the key; courage and determination are what it takes to gain free thinking and that is enlightenment to many out side of the system of nirvana extablished as the philosphy of the Buddha.

Be willing to question everything and willing to admit "I don't know but I'll find out" instead of thinking you already know everything.
Thats why Atheists have a leg up in the knowledge department. They're willing to question rather than be personally limited by their religion.

The key to knowledge is the willingness to learn, the willingness to question what is presented and do your own research, and the willingness to have an open mind and allow your ideas to be changed by what you learn.

KNOWLEDGE: ~noun. "acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles, as from study or investigation; general erudition"
From what I can tell about previous added details it seems as though you want to find the "keys to wisdom". I could be wrong.
I guess the key to knowledge is from learning. :)

Being taught in a compassionate manner, traveling (at least in one's mind), often reward, even, in all honesty. WANTING to learn. Being able to see everything without judgment, to partake and learn from but not become angered by. To me, the greatest secret is to teach one's children well, with empathy and kindness and respect, to love them regardless of their choices, to give them an open mind. Trust is a key factor here. I still believe that finding wonder in that which we do not know will help us find knowledge. Without these things, the ability and desire to learn diminishes. We must bring our children up to be cautious, yes, but unprejudiced as well. I believe one of the keys to knowledge is making things more interesting, even on one's own. People don't like things they don't know often and the way to learn about them is to remain open and in the moment. To live each day like it may be your last.
Patience is a key as well. To be knowledgeable about nearly every subject is to be patient with oneself and others. Everybody has a limit to what they can learn and remember, but listening to people and being interested and studying that which is unknown to us will always give one SOME knowledge about everything, however little. Once we grow impatient we stop learning and start reacting emotionally rather than mindfully. This is going to be a given in any human being but I believe the true "test" is to let of the impatience whenever possible and learn from it. Why were you angry? Were things taking too long? Did you feel nagged? Are you just grouchy today? And once you ask yourself these questions think about what you can do to improve your mood and your patience. Be empathic and sympathetic. Is your day really going that bad? Is whomever is upsetting you just upset themselves? Is it worthwhile to be around them or to move on?
Ah, there are many keys to knowledge. Patience, trust, faith in the fact that things can and will get better and are much more worth learning about than remaining stagnant. Reading, writing, asking questions - keeping open always to new ideas and living for each moment as it comes. Whether the moments are wonderful or terrible or just in-between, we can learn from them. This is true when we allow ourselves to relate to others as well.
I believe that the "master key" for opening one's mind is not being fearful of everything, especially that which you don't know. Learning can only truly come about when we lack fear, and to rid ourselves of fear we need to stop linking our emotions to what we learn so much, to take a step back and not judge, and to allow others to help you when you feel you can't do things alone. I have panic attacks, Uncle Wayne. Over years it became a disorder. I became highly depressed. I went on disability because I couldn't get myself "un-stuck". I absolutely needed help from others or I would have died, without a doubt. It is never easy to face one's fears alone, and doing it with someone doesn't show a lack of courage or independence. The more one exposes themselves to the world, whether it be alone or with the guidance of others, the more one will learn. In turn, the more we learn the less we fear. It is so important to teach our children not to fear us and thus not to fear the world.
