Mushy, cloyingly sweet and tough, they are more likened to red yucky to me, and always have been

Neither... Red Delicious don't stay crisp and crunchy... they get dry and soft. And Granny Smith might be a bit too tart for the sweet coating of a candy apple. I'd use Gala or Romeo apples... readily available at this time of year. Both of these apples are sweet and they are nicely crunchy. They'll hold up well with the coating.

Most red apples have different tastes. I enjoy apples that are called Pink Ladies.

To distinguish them from yellow delicious.

Yes, they are mealy, but they're good for making applesauce and desserts.

They are not my favorite eating apple. I like a crisp, tarter apple like a Mac.

Obviously they are red, and are apples, and stupid advertising execs think that if they call them delicious, other people will buy them.

That name is just the VARIETY name. So it sticks. "Red Delicious"

You are so right! Fuji, Galas and Honeycrisps are SO much better and more flavorful!
