It all depends upon what you like to do, and what you feel that you can do that will make the most impact. Your volunteer center can help you find a project or non-profit agency that matches your interest. These projects can be one-time, short-term, or long-term, so you will be able to find something right for you.
Volunteer centers specialize in pre-screening projects and agencies and connecting volunteers with these groups. Here are some links to help you find your volunteer center:

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the library, work at the food bank and children's shelter, clean our parks and beaches, and a lot of other stuff. I also produce our local podcast and help with marketing activities at the volunteer center.
Good luck.

It just depends what you are looking for. You can do community work in so many ways. Do you like to work with kids? Is there a kids center (Big Brothers/Sisters as an example) that you can work at? Is there a crisis shelter for children or women in your area? Is that something you would like to do? Just some thoughts. You can work at nursing homes, or for the veterans. The Red Cross always needs people. If you like outdoors see if there is some sort of enviromental group or park you can work at. If you want to help raise money is there a fundraiser you can help with? The best thing to do is to find out what local charities and community centers are in your area, I would also contact local nursing homes and shelters (found online or in your phone book) and contact them. I work with a lot of diffrent charities and they are always looking for people. If there is some type of project in your city/town such as save the old school contact the head of the programs to see how you can help. Be sure when you contact them tell them what you like to do, such as you want to have contact with people ect... Of course if you really want a challenge you could set up a food drive or something like that. Good Luck hope this helps!

The one that is best is whatever one you feel comfortable, happy and capable of doing. Ask yourself what is important to you and your community, what your talents are and what you want to get out of it and then do some research to find what a good fit is. I chose to be a court appointed advocate because I love working with kids and speaking out for them in court and also I'm not afraid of judges. Haha! : ) Whatever you do, be happy with it and know you are needed. Most of our social services could not stand without us volunteers.

There are so many lonely elders, who need a bit of help with groceries, and a visit for tea. Never feel that nobody needs you. We all do.

What I do is when it is sunday, I always feed the homeless. We make bags with different foods in them, toothbrushes, toothpaste, ect. When you help homeless people, it makes you feel so good to help people who are way less fortunate then you. Trust me! :)
