trashy is as trashy does I guess, pretty nasty when you figure that Tuberculosis lives on the sidewalk in spit for up to 17 days.

If you are in NYC, how is it that you know the spitters are from the lower class neighborhoods? There are many different classes of communities there. People have been spitting for centuries. It's nothing new. I never heard of it being a fashion statement though. If they are truly from the lower class neighborhoods as you say, maybe they spit more because they are around more pollution then the " not so lower class " people. Just a thought.

What are you doing in the lower class neighborhoods? Spitting is disgusting and gross and I am sure that rich people as well as poor people have spit at one time or another.

I don't know but I see it here in San Diego very frequently too. I wouldn't say it's only in lower SES areas. Perhaps it has to do with the acceptability of spitting in other cultures? NYC and San Diego have a high immigrant population. Maybe it's just acceptable in their culture?
Not the most sanitary habit, but I see it all of the time.

This is simply a case of parents not teaching their children the basics of civil behavior. Usually, this happens in families where the parents themselves were never taught the correct way to behave and so it becomes a generational problem.
It is the same reason why people try to crowd onto an elevator the second the door opens without allowing passengers to exit first.
Social idiots.
This is why we ought to be teaching these basic things in our public schools; too many kids don't get it at home.
Good Luck!

It's not the class of the neighborhood, it's the manners of the person.
I know uncouth people who will spit in public no matter what neighborhood they're in.

I dont believe it has anything to do with the neighborhood that people come from. It's just that people who does this type of thing are low class themselves.

I think you'll find that high class people go to low class neighborhoods to do their spitting and keep their own place clean
