Our desires can be influenced by a lot of things.

Our unchosen desires may be a result of past experiences deeply rooted in our subconscious mind. A lot of our habits, behaviour, fears, likes, dislikes and personality are imprinted in our subconscious mind. The sourceof all these imprins are past experiences carried forward from one life to another life. This is why deep meditation is always the best method to change or to be free of an undesirable personality trait.

The chosen desires can come from lifestyle, family and social influences.

You do not chose a thing merely when you think you are aware of it.Your desires emanate from your imaginations and imaginations give rise to discoveries and inventions.Your awarenes of your desires is like a child wanting a thing when he is aware of its presence but their are some inbuilt desires in mankind as awhole i.e. to seek the love of God.One choses it against all odds, when he fully aware of his desire. The passion for chosing is a direct function of extent of awareness about it.

Just because you are aware that you want something does that mean you chose to want it?

psychologically the Id controls wants--also know as the child=I want what I want Thus the desire is to fulfilled desire.
Self control--self actualization-helps us to control wants in an appropriate manor. This is also called ego but your superego leads you to Religion
Religion says your God can help you control your earthly wants but giving you a heavenly desire to please God. This requires Faith. Faith to some is the victory to others it is foolishness. psychology and religious philosophy can both give you answers. They both require belief one requires Faith.

If you are aware you want something yes, there is a thought process you have gone through to make that decision.

However, if one wants something and knows it is not a good decision then you must make a choice to follow through or not.
