I live in a 1/1 apartment and for some reason out of no where this bad smell comes up. It happens like 2-3 times a week and usually at night and seems to originate in the closet where the hot water heater is. I checked for a gas leak but saw it was an electric heater. I also looked for a dead rat or something like that but couldn't find anything in there yet. Perhaps the person down stairs is making meth or something... Anyways anyone have a similiar situation or any ideas how to fix this.

Weird smell...? Like what kind of smell...? Is it a chemical smell or a dead animal smell, or a mildew type smell...what? It is hard to say where the smell is originating without knowing what type of smell it is. You might have your landlord or apartment manager come and check it out if possible. They may be familiar with this type of complaint from other tenants. Other than that I don't know what to tell you.

Dude!!! I come home everyday and think "huh, is this really what I smell like, or do my downstairs neighbors gross up my apartment?" I'm moving. The smell is not the main reason, but it is on the list. I do a ton of cooking, and I wonder if that has something to do with it, but I've never had another home smell... funny before. My visitors have never said anything, and I've asked a few friends who've said they don't know what I'm talking about.... I don't know what's up w/ either of our places, but I do notice mine is stronger some days than others. Good luck, dude.

If someone is cooking meth, it'll smell strongly of ammonia... like a cat pee smell.

If it smells like cat pee, call the police & report the building as a suspected meth lab site.

If it smells like something else (dead rat?), call the owner &/or caretaker & explain the problem.

Ring your local health department and tell them that you have a foul smell and that it seems to be coming from downstairs, you never know what it could be but tell them that it makes you sick so that they will act on it. It could be someone making meth or you never know they may have a body in there like jeffrey. Does it smell like chemicals or does it smell like something rotting? Either way you should have something done about it.

Could be meth, or a downdraft on the exhuast pipe, or a gas leak, or the air vent for the toilet, you might want to have the landowner or plumber inspect it, or call code enforcement and ask their opinion.

if you think that it might be a meth lab, then you need to contact the authority's! because if it is and then something goes wrong in the process of them cooking chemicals below you then your life could be at risk! the police will be happy if you pass this concern on to them!

It's most likely mold. Happened when I used to live in an appartment (when I was like... 3). You should move. Mold can kill you, and living in an apartment, you can't replace the carpet.

Could be mold or mildew if there is a water leak somewhere. Mold can be hazardous to your health. I would find some way to check it out

well if its a chemical type smell...it probably is some type of drug! If it smells like something is decomposing it is probably your disposal in the kitchen, or if you have a fireplace ...check the chimney ...it may be a dead cat!
