Hollywood is in Los Angeles. It has always been and always will be part of L.A. Los Angeles is so big that they designate sort of neighborhoods. I live in Chatsworth, but it is still in L.A. Your friend may be confused because there is the City of West Hollywood, which is it's own city. It has it's own Mayor and they use L.A. County Sherrifs instead of LAPD. You have to be gay to live there though or a pot smoker..Just kidding!
Hollywood does have an honorary mayor, Johnny Carson.
You are right and your friend is wrong.

Hollywood is in Los Angeles County, in the City of Los Angeles, California, but there is also a Hollywood, Florida.

Hollywood is officially a district within the City of Los Angeles, not a separate city. However, West Hollywood IS a city in itself, and unless you watch for the signs you won't realize that you're not in L.A. anymore

Both of you guys are right. Hollywood is it's own city and Los Angeles is it's own city. Hollywood is in the county of Los Angeles. Also in outside linggo, LA can represent San Fernando, LA and Orange County.

Hollywood itself is part of LA, but West Hollywood, and North Hollywood are their own cities. Hollywood is part of LA County (not sure what that other person was thinking who said it's orange county). Also, there are several cities in LA county, which are their own cities, but the majority of LA county is the city of LA.

I think it's a neighborhood in Los Angeles. The county is Orange County. And the state is California.

Brittanica Encyclopedia says it's a district. But this site describes it as a neighborhood.

Wiki says it's a district, and there's all you could ever want here:

And just for fun -- did you know there's a Hollywood in FLORIDA, too?
