Mostly to remove a disgusting taste from there mouth, it is a natural reaction tied in with the gag reflex. Howver it can also be seen as habit and culture norms. I have a grandmother who spits at me a little as a sign of good luck.

Because no one wants to swallow a loogie. The nasty boogers that go down the back of your throat and end up stuck there, Until you hack them out
