Hi there, there are some of the main nodes of the lymphatic system under the arm, they are called the auxillary lymph nodes and vary from person to person, depends on your genetics exactly how many there are, you can see a diagram on my website, http://www.lymphland.com/directory.html look at the bottom under lymph nodes, click on the arm nodes button.

People with less nodes, when other nodes are damaged or removed like your friend, can be prone to lymphedema, my website is about lymphedema. You might want to refer her to my site to read about the signs and symptoms so if she develops it she will know what is happening to her and she can get treated right away to prevent it from worsening, once you have lymphedema, you always will have it and it is progressive.
