You could go with that Ruger Mark II semi-auto pistol or if you what something more power take a look at a Glock G23/G22, both shoot the 40cal.

To find a good deal may take some time, check you phone book, newspaper and sin shows. Gun show have always been my best bet for a good deal.

This is an interesting question.

IMO, you don't need to start out slow or small in shooting handguns. Think of the handgun as a tool. If you wanted a set of hand tools, you would probably make sure you get a decent quality set that you can use for your intended purposes.

If you want a hand gun for self-defense, then look to semi-autos in 9mm Luger, .40 S&W and .45 ACP, and to revolvers in .38 special, .357 magnum, .44 special and .44 magnum. There are many other calibers, but I'm just mentioning some of the more popular ones. Good quality manufacturerers include Glock, Sig, Berretta, H&K, Smith & Wesson, Colt, Taurus, Kimber, Para Ordnance, CZ, Wilson Combat, Ruger just to name a few.

If you just want to plink or target shoot, then a .22 LR would be perfect. Ruger makes nice and affordable .22s.

Hunting handguns range from big bore to .22 to single shot handguns chambered for high powered rifle cartridges, so it really depends on the kind of game you're after.

Basically, I'm saying you should buy a good quality gun, whatever the type of shooting you're looking at. I don't think you want to be dealing with some old beat up cheap gun that may be a safety risk.

One more thing. If you have the means, I recommend buying more than one gun. If you want self defense, plinking and hunting, then you should get 3 guns. You could plink with a combat handgun, but .22s are so much fun that it's worth getting.

Have fun and be safe.

For starters Glock doesn't make a 357 mag, its a 357 SIG. Big difference there. The 45 ACP and standard factory 45 Colt kicks way less than a 357 mag. But a hand gun in 357 mag isn't a bad choice. Because you can shoot low cost light recoil 38 specials through the 357 mag. If you buy a revolver like Rugers Blackhawk convertible, you will also get an extra cylinder to swap out that will let you fire 9mm. They retail for less than 400 normally. You cant get 3 guns for less than 400 bucks with out going to jail. You can also get 22 revolvers like Heritage arms Rough riders for less than 200. They are pretty good revolvers. I've had one for about 14 years now and put at least 500 rounds a month through her.

If you live in Canada, that Ruger .22, or a gun very much like it will be about the biggest gun you can buy while keeping your government red-tape headache to an absolute minimum.

Canada requires that you have a "acquisition and possession" license before you can own a firearm. Handgun ownership is limited to collectors of curios and relics, target shooters, and those with a demonstrated need for a firearm for protection (i.e. military, security and law-enforcement.)

But really, even if you lived in the USA, the Ruger Mk. 2 or Mk. 3 semi-automatic, or Ruger Bearcat revolver, both in .22LR, would still be excellent guns for the beginning shooter, as the .22LR has minimal blast and recoil and allows a shooter to develop good shooting habits and shoot accurately and often for dirt-cheap, and Ruger makes safe, rock-solid guns.

Not all that sure what you are ALLOWED to buy in Canada anymore.
I would recommend a 9mm semi auto like one of the Taurus models. Inexpensive, easy to shoot, cheap ammo.

I would recommend a .38 cal. revolver. A Smith & Wesson is a good choice. A good used model 10 can be had for well under $300. Good accuracy, inexpensive ammo.

Ruger GP-100 .357 magnum six inch barrel. I think it'll be close to $350-$400. It's the gun I started with and it is still my favorite one that I own. Accuracy is great, (2 does down) the feel is great and if you're just plinking, .38 ammo is cheap as well. I prefer revolvers to the semi's but that's just me.

A model 1911 .45, Taurus, Smith & Wesson, Kimber, Springfield Armoury, Rock Island Armoury, Armscor, etc.

And of course Colt!!!

Every major arms company that is worth a spit makes one. That should tell ya something.

Look into MKS firearms(they are also known as High Point). they are very cheap and carry a lifetime warranty. They range in 380 caliber(apprx $90 US) to 45 caliber(apprx $165 US). They are semi automatic so they don't kick back like a revolver. That will aid you in accurate shooting.

I would have to say a good starter pistol would have to be a .25 caliber it smaller and cheaper.
