i got two mock dog-tags, and i need to make them look old and faded for a photo project. the problem i got is i can't get them to get dull... they're very shinny. i've soaked them in water, to try and rust em, and i've tried soakin 'em in rubbin alcholl, and lighter fluid to try to disolve any coating that they are coated in, but the won't dull down.

any other suggestions?

Have you tried acetone? You know, fingernail polish remover. Also, since this is a photo project, you could pull a Hollywood maneuver and paint them the distressed look you want. Some home centers have products that rapidly age copper and other metals, so you could look there, but you need to know what kind of metal you have. If it's stainless steel, just go with the paint technique.

Have you tried steel wool? Lightly rubbing them in circular motions should do the trick. Oh... and water alone won't work. You might try salt water.... Just add lots of salt to hot water and soak them in that... And if that still doesn't work, fake it... By that I mean use black paint and wash them with a rag soaked in the paint.... That should dull them... or perhaps use black sharpie marker... ink and wipe, ink and wipe... or swipe at them with black nail polish until you get the look you want.... I know that doing it with black latex paint works, as I've done an antique finish on shiny metal lockers this way.

Try vinegar or Coke.
