Get him to a groomer, do not cut the clumps your self, you will end up with pieces of skin in your hand. I know this from experience. I have 2 himilyan cats and one of them got so knotted last summer that she had to get shaved. Actually it didn't bother her at all. For some reason she loved it. She's 17 and she started to act like a kitten. Take the cat to a good groomer, I'm sure you can find one through your vet. As far as cost, it varies by area, so can't even give you an idea as I don't know where you live. I doubt they will have to put him to sleep. My situation was different, they did it while they were taking some teeth out, so the cat was already knocked out. But the longer you wait the harder it will be for them to deal with the cat. It's a hazzard of having one of these kinds of cats. One day they are fine, the next day a total mess. Don't blame yourself, you didn't do anything wrong, the damn cats do it to themselves.

Go to a grooming salon. This is very painful for the kitty. They will shave him down. Sedation is not necessary. The cost will probably be from $15-$25.00. Then just make sure to brush the kitty each day for about 10 min.

Good luck

hi i was a groomer for 8 years till i had my son.i would suggest you take your cat to a groomer who works in a vets office .that is the safest for sedation.i would not recommend that you cut your cat because cats have very thin skin nd if you Nick it it will tear like paper!!you will be looking at @40.00 to 60.00 dollars for the grooming.that will include a bath and hair cut.your cat will probably be bald .the sedation will be @30.00 dollars.the price may be different wear you live.your cat will be very upset when you get him back.that is normal.it will take about a day or two to get back to normal.make sure you take the cat to the groomer in a pet taxi.that will be easier for you.you will have to leave your cat for several hours.that is normal because the cat has to come out of sedation before you can take it home.if you need any more info please e-mail me.

I rescued a cat that had the same problem. These mats are very painful and can cause infection. Their skin is fragile so I would take him to the vet or to a groomer. Your vet's office could give you advice. Let the experts do it. My cat is much happier since his visit to the groomer.

My mother-in-law just had to do this with her long-haired Maine Coon cat who won't tolerate having his belly brushed and it had become matted. She took him to the vet and had his teeth cleaned, his nails trimmed and his belly shaved all at the same time. So basically she took him in and had several "routine maintence" things done all at the same time. He was sedated for all of this. Total cost was around $250 for the whole thing.

Your local veterinary clinic can shave your kitty for you. It may require sedation if he has an attitude problem. Cost depends on where you go. A shave down with sedation at my old clinic was like $65. Good luck!

look for a reputable grooming salon, who specialize with kitty cats. sounds like the best thing to have done is shave, my brother had this done with one of his kitty cats and the cost was 25.00
being sedated is not necessary

you might want to get a trim for your cat, and the right brush for a long haired cat is the one with very close bristles of wire, and they are bent at thr tip(PetCo).get cut at vet maybe...that one i dont know..unless the cat is totally crazy it will not be put asleep, it might want you to hold him/her while sshe/he is getting trimmed.the scratching is just fleas, or the clumps probably have particles in it that make it uncomfortable.hope i could help!!

If he bites and scratches you then he will need to be sedated at the vets and shaved.
