Visit a homeless shelter?! What a jerk!
Well, I'm not sure where you're staying in LA (the beach, hollywood, downtown, etc), but we have 4 amusement parks...Six Flags, Disney, Universal Studios and Knotts Berry Farm.
We also have some great beaches. Venice and Santa Monica are good for shopping and people watching. Malibu and Hermosa are better for swimming.
You can walk around Hollywood and see a movie at the El Capitan or the Mann Chinese.
We have the Getty and LACMA museums if you like art.
You could go watch a taping of a tv show like Jay Leno, or your favorite sitcom (just go to their websites for more info on being an audience member. Those are usually free!)
Warner Brothers studio has a backlot tour.
We have the Griffith Observatory if you're into science and planets, and want to see a great view of LA from the mountaintop.
The California Science center has a cool Star Wars exhibit right now.

for a teenager,first of all, u kno the bus is an ongoing transportation to accommodate the city, so you should take advantage of it. the shopping and the beautiful life is congested in LA. but if you dont have much (ie sucky high school allowance) money for LA shopping, theres always the coffee shops/internet shops to chill at, the beaches arent that far away. theres santa monica, where you can go to the carnival area or rent some bikes and ride down pch, very beautiful. i kno that with all these things such as internet and coffee shops, teenagers have more hang out spots and dont justhave go to each others' houses and get stoned after school. bad! very bad! bowling is a fun thing to do, as well, esp at night! dont forget universal studios, pasadena, disneyland (oc county tho), catalina island (30 min away from downtown), hollywood, sunset, roberston, rodeo..etc i probably was not much help, but i hope u find something to do!

First find out what you like to do that is productive and wont get you in trouble. I recommend surfing. The buses there only cost a buck for all day travel. If thats not your cup of tea try to get envolved with your community, volenteer and get out of the house. Plenty of sunshine and good times but watch out its very easy to get in trouble there.

find a good place to shop and youre good. all the shopping here is excellent. hehe
and i would go to the beach. i love the beach and i think anyone who comes here should make the beach a priority.
