i read somewhere that archangels (though more commonly known), are not the highest type of angel, but instead are closer to the bottom of the pecking order.

Seraphim, Cherubim, Ophanim, Kyriotetes, Dynameis, Exousiai, Archai, Archangels, Angels...in that order.
Lucifer used to be and angel above the seraphim, and the demons are various fallen angels. There are also "the four living creatures" but I'm not sure if they count as angels, and if they did where they would fit on the list. There are various viewpoints on this but this is the general theory on what is believed to be the order of the hierarchy of angels.

Man is just a little less than the angels above them are Archangels then Virtues, Powers, Principalities,Thrones, Dominations, Cherubim and at the top Seraphim.

well the bible itself does not discribe the order of angels . however a monk wrote in detail about angels and there order in heaven . i could list them off for you but i think you would find this video or tv show much better then a list . it is on youtube and i am bill739. on there if you look me up on youtube and go though my favorites you will see this movie its about 30 min long and no on youtube you dont have to down load anything. angelz has given you the correct list and order as written by the monk. still think you or anyone would love to see the movie and this other one of my favorites about a 12 year painter it is a cnn one.

types or ranks? - there are different viewpoints on that
there is the belief that there are only two types cherubim-seraphim and that the other names are ranks - there is the not popular view that the nephilim are also actually an angelic branch - humping women - and that Satan may have been their head archangel
but again there is the viewpoint that every mention in the bible is pretty much a type of angel
in this regards Catholics are prolly a better source then I am - in that Im definitely mainstream on my views in this area

there's lots: archangels are one of them.
There are also angels with many different numbers of wings: ranging grom 2 to more than 6!
I recommend reading books by Joan Carrol Cruz. One is entitled "Angels and Devils" and answers that question among others.

There is many types of angels and a wide range of colors, even rainbow angels. small and large, from 3 foot to 15 foot tall.
Angels to protect, to guide, singing angels, angels with wings, and angels without wings, warrior angels, some in full armor, choir angels and many more.
Their hair, skin color and clothes range in many colors depending on their job.

L.A. Angels are a baseball team, Hell's Angels are a motorcycle gang, Charlies Angels were TV detectivettes, Snow Angels appear in winter when it snows... :)
