There is a basic need among the more gullible and weak-minded to have an invented friend. Often occurs in toddler stage! Most grow out of that phase.
Ancient man had many fears and the god concept countered those fears.
Many of the old gods have been demoted to historical facts but the current crop are deeply entrenched in the minds of the fantasists and they refuse to see the reality. Isn't it very strange?
I suggest that there won't be any new ones, all jokes aside, and that, eventually, the current loonie-toons will fade away very gradually - except for the muslims. They are crazy enough to hang on to the archaic nonsense for far longer, for a variety of reasons, and the existence of allah is not a valid one. We'll see but maybe after I am gone. Send me a postcard and let me know how it all turns out.

Well, what has actually happened is that mankind has explained the majority of the gods of the world out of existance through science. Man, in ancient times had gods for everything they could not exaplin. A god controlled the sun, A god controlled the moon. A god controlled the tides. A god controlled fertility. The list is endless. Through science we have explained them away.
But, there are two questions we as a species will never have a definitive answer for:
How did all this start?
&
What happens when you die?
Those two questions will keep the major religions in the world going forever.
That is why atheist are misunderstood. People of religion like to think that atheist think they know everything. We don't. We just prefer to say we do not know rather than fill in those gaps with something that truthfully is absurd, a supernatural entity.

I am not so sure they keep reinventing GOD persay but they would certainly want to have something or someone to number one blame and number two look to for guidance. We are a social animal that being said we need leaders and we need followers, we cannot function any other way. Thus if there was no GOD we would probably invent something similar in nature.

What keeps people inventing gods is that they need to believe there is something "bigger" than them that is "in control." The reason for this is two-fold.
1) It abdicates people from having to be responsible, mature adults. Adults prefer the option of being children when things get too difficult, so they can whine to daddy (god.)
2) It allows them to cling to their favorite excuse for not progressing in life - namely fear.

As long as humans can't explain everything, ther ewill be room for the existence of god.
Hell, even if mankind could explain everything, most people would be ignorant, which would leave room for god.

Gosh Gandalf, that's two questions in a row and my answer is the same, read anything by Terry Pratchett and you get a great laugh and maybe even answers to this question. This time I suggest Terry P's 'Small Gods'

Im pretty sure. People will adapt and create something to supress their emotions or life in general. Religions are usually most active during war.

It is a freudian slip... it is a "kink" in mankind to keep inventing gods... they really aren't all that necessary.

Absolutely.
And see how the world is today. What would it be like if no one feared divine retribution for their callous or heinous acts!
