I am replacing doors in my home but now noticed that the doors and walls in this house were built with 1x4's or 1x6's. So when I buy a standard door, its made for a 2x4 wall. How do you change that to make it more up to date?

Are you sure that's the framing you're looking at and not the door jamb material? Door jambs are typically constructed of 1 by or thinner material that is attached to the framing. I don't think there has ever been an accepted practice of using 1 by lumber for framing since it doesn't have the required strength, rigidity, etc.

The 2" is the thickness of the board. In your case, yours is 1"... the wall is still 4" thick.... (well, 3 1/2") so the wall is actually 3 1/2" + 1/2" drywall plus 1/2" drywall = 4 1/2" total door opening thickness. The door frame trim will cover 1/8" each side so away you go. If the wall is a 6" thick one, get a door frame that is 1X6 if you can... if not, make your own door frame... get 1X6 and tack it to the 2X6 and then attach the door stop and affix the hinges... done.

You have to be looking at something else there is no way your house is framed in 1 x anything. If you nail sheet rock up it would split, You must be looking at the door jam, Your house will be made out of 2x3 or 2x4 or higher.
