I have been directed to compile a list of common maladaptive coping patterns... things people do subconsciously to not deal with their feelings.
Like:
drinking, drugs, shopping, avoidance, etc.
I have about 30 of them and my brain is starting to hurt.
anyone wanna throw some out there for me?
Thanks

I tried to come up with some common maladaptive behaviors based on Personality Disorder traits in the DSM-IV

1. Depending on others to make your decisions
2. Manipulating others
3. Mistrust of others, believing that everyone is against you, paranoia
4. Withdrawal from interacting with other people
5. Withdrawal into a fantasy world, belief in superstitions, magic, etc.
6. Excessive rigidity in following rules of behavior, lists, and so on
7. Calling attention to yourself, trying to be the center of attention through your appearance or behavior
8. Narcissism, believing everything revolves around you, believing you are "special" and therefore entitled to special treatment
9. Deceiving others, breaking the law, hurting other people physically or psychologically
10. Blaming other people for your problems
11. Passive-aggressiveness; avoiding responsibility by deliberately "forgetting" or sabotaging tasks you are expected to do, and pretending it wasn't deliberate
12. Excessive emotion, quick mood changes
13. Hurting yourself by cutting, etc.
14. Failure to control impulses, excessive spending, substance abuse, promiscuous sexual activity
15. Malingering; pretending to have mental or physical illness to avoid responsibility or to have people feel sorry for you

forgetting/amnesia (dissociation?)
getting in arguments (substitute another, easier emotion)
helping others with their problems too much
getting overly involved in church (I'm holier than you are)
