Anything to the excess is bad, 1 piece of bread is not in excess, I don't mean to diss your mom but she is getting a little overboard.

A sandwich implies that bread be used! That's what a sandwich is! No, one piece of bread is not bad for you! Wheat is better than white anyway.

Some breads are better than others. Try to stay away from high salt and sugar breads.
There are breads out now with low quantities of salt and sugar and some also enriched with omega 3 fatty acids.
Eating one white sandwich a day is not going to hurt you. As with everything rhese day, always in moderation.

It sounds like your mother is some kind of whacked-out carb-nazi. Besides the fact that there is nothing wrong with bread, wheat bread is healthier that white. I could see her getting upset by white bread, as some is little more than sugar.

Well unless you're allergic to wheat, wheat's perfectly healthy for you. A LOT better for you than a slice of highly refined, chemically additive rich, white bread.
