My speech is on why you should get most piercings or tattoos done professionally, and why you should look for certain standards in a tattooist/piercer. Any information?

Your speech should be on why you should get ALL piercings or tattoos doen professionally, not MOST.

I don't have the time or space for what you need to learn. Go to the professional organizations for a start -
Alliance of Professional Tattooists
Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals
Association of Professional Piercers

The primary reason is safety.

A professional is well versed in, and uses proper sterilization techniques...everything from changing gloves between steps (to avoid cross contamination) to autoclave sterilization. Most amatuers have the concept of sterilization, but not the knowledge to properly maintain a sterile environment.

A professional has gone thru an apprenticeship, learning the technical ability that goes with the artistic skill. Depth, placement, aftercare...these are all things that a professional has spent time learning (both practical and theory). A professional is trained on how to deal with someone who faints, goes into shock (it's happened twice at my old shop), flinches when being pierced, and a variety of other potential incidents. Many areas require a basic first aid/CPR certification for tattoo artists and piercers. An amatuer may have had someone show them certain things, or read about them in a book; but without a proper apprenticeship, its random facts and information that can be very easily applied incorrectly. A good 20-30% of my business was fixing the things that someone's buddy did to them in his basement.

It may seem a bit extreme to think about, but in reality, tattoos and piercings are a form of minor surgery...you're breaking the skin in order to implant jewelery or modify its appearance. Do you want someone who has taken the time to properly learn each step to ensure your safety, or someone who bought a kit out of a magazine, and is willing to (in many cases) work on you for what amounts to a case of beer?

ummm wow i would never go to someone that isn't professonal, first off AIDS!!! in my state all of the known sanitary tattoo and piercing shops all of the workers are certified by the american red cross. i honestly would not go to a person who doesn't look like they have good tattoo work done on them, a lot of artists will tattoo themselves or have a good friend that also knows what they are doing work on them. and most tattoo artist and body piercists have portfolios of their work. and if the shop doesn't look clean well find a better place. as for getting work done do some research on the proper way to do a peircing or a tattoo before getting one done that way when u are looking around @ shops u can question them if u feel the need.

1. because of the bodily fluids involved there is potential risk for infection including but not limited to staph, hepatitis and HIV. most non professionals do not have access to sterile tools or the equipment to sterilize them.

2. who wants a crappy tattoo or piercing? not me! less experienced people or people who are not professionals may not be good at getting piercings straight or in the right spot. tattooers may be bad at doing even the simplest shading or line work.

it is definitely worth the money to pay for something worth having.

You should always get it done professionally due to infection / disease/ poor quality work. For most states it is illegal to get any of that done by someone who is not licensed. Anytime you are poking holes in your body it should be done in a sterile environment and by a trained professional.

it could get seriously infected if its not done in a sterile environment and it looks better having a professional artist do it.

i don't think you should be geting info on yahoo answer. who knows how much of it is true. and theres really know way to tell unless you research it, which would take longer than just researching it in the first place.
