If he can hold it on his own, it should be ok. Show him how to use it, then let him go. He'll figure it out.

No 9 months is not too early to start giving him a sippy cup. Does he take water well? If not try giving him diluted juice in it so that he has an incentive to drink out of it. Are you trying to use the hard nipple sippy cups or the soft nipple? We started with the soft so that he could get used to it and he did pretty well with it. I think my little boy was 7 or 8 months when I first started him on it. My little girl is 6 months and I'll be starting her on it in the next month or so.

My oldest refued a sippy cup until he turned 1. I told him that he was a big boy because he threw away his bottle (on his own) and he took it. I gave him juice in the first few. But my second son, took his first sippy around 9-10 months, basically the same as the first. Though it is a good idea to have a cup for milk only, then one for juice only. The juice sometimes leaves a nasty taste in the cup, regardless how much your scrub it. Just give em time, each child is different, and does things at his/her own pace.

Tips and Tricks for introducing and/or transitioning your baby to a sippy cup
Offer your baby the sippy cup as soon as baby is able to maintain a good tight grasp.
Choose a sippy cup that is light weight and easy for tiny hands to handle. The Avent "Avent Naturally Magic" cup is one that is highly recommended by parents!
Allow your baby to play with and explore the sippy cup - yes, even if it means baby bangs and tosses the sippy cup around!
Encourage your baby to hold the cup with 2 hands - a sippy cup with liquid in it may be too heavy for baby to hold & maneuver with one hand.
Show your baby how to use the sippy cup by example and help guide the sippy cup up to baby's mouth.
Water in the sippy cup is a great first liquid to add to the sippy cup. You may also add formula and/or breast milk.
Formula and/or breastmilk in a sippy cup however, may not entice your baby with the wonder and excitement of a totally new experience.

I started giving my daughter a sippy cup at 7 months and she did really well with the gerber cups they have handles and also have soft spouts on them. Also when she quit taking a bottle at 10 months it was easy to measure forumla in them because they have the ounces on the sides. You will have to figure what works best for your little one. He's at a good age to start with one because most doctor want them off the bottle at a year old. Good luck to you.

start putting his formula in the cup during the day. I started my son on a cup at 8 months old. He is now 12 months and off the bottle. Also you have to get a trainer cup, a cup with a soft sprout until he starts drinking out of the cup good then change to a hard sprout.

Not at all. Now's a good time to introduce him to cups. He'll probably just play with it now, but that's okay because right now you just want to get him used to them. Just keep doing what you are, giving a little water in the cup, and when he starts getting used to it, try a little infant juice in it instead.

I HAVE A 3 YR OLD AND A 2 YR OLD GIRLS. I STARTED GIVE MY DAUGHTERS THEIR SIPPY CUPS WHEN THEY HIT A YEAR. THE BEST WAY TO SWITCH IS THE LET THEM KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING OR YOU CAN THEM THROW THE BOTTLE AWAY THEMSELF. JUST MAKE SURE THE BABY KNOW THAT ITS TIME FOR THE NEXT STEP.

Try the Nubby cup, sold at walmart. They transition really well with that one since it has a soft spout. Trust me, 2 kiddos that LOVE that cup
