about the same as the difference between red and scarlet.
Same basic meaning, different flavor.
Your pastor may have a different definition for them, but that's really just his opinion. Faith and belief are synonyms.

They are very similar. To a non believer they would be considered synonyms.
To me a belief is a logical thought. Like when men thought the earth was flat.
While faith is a feeling. I put my faith in the teachings of the Bible when the illogical is actually the logical. Like the first man that said the earth is round and spinning really fast but you can't fall off.
If a friend tells you something unbelievable it is your faith in that friend that makes you believe them.

According to the Bible Hebrews 1:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things unseen."
it also says "Without Faith it is impossible to believe God."
Belief is what you stand for. These can be tenets or Doctrines (should be found in or allued to in the Bible)
Your Faith is in your Beliefs. And you can believe by your faith

Faith: Unquestioning confidence/trust in the evidence of things not seen.
Belief: Conviction or acceptance that certain things are indeed true or real.
The difference is you can believe in something but not have faith in it. I can accept the fact that there is a swing on the swing-set but I may not have full confidence that it will not break when I swing on it. You can see the swing, but you can not guarantee that it will (or will not) hold you just by looking at it. In order to find out, you would have to put trust in it by actually sitting on it and swinging...Hope that helps.

It is my understanding that the word belief is based on the old word 'lief' which meant wish. We wish it to be.
Belief is more static, if you can imagine something written down or perhaps written in stone as it were.
Where as faith is more active. Almost like it is something we 'do'. More of an ongoing thing.

While they are both similar, faith takes it one step further.
For example: If I believe in God and continue to live a sinful life; that is believing in God. If I have Faith in God, I will worship Him and not continue to live in habitual sin.
Faith is Belief and action combined together.
God Bless You...Peace.
