I spent two years as an early intervention specialist in a birth to three program. The children typical used a spoon independently by 12-15 months, and had it nearly mastered by 18 months.

If you are looking to have your child start using a spoon, give them one as early as possible. If they are still young and just beginning foods, let both of you have a spoon, and just let them explore it. Soon they will begin to try scooping (more like dipping) and getting the food to the mouth. it is a fun and messy process, but well worth it when you can eat a family dinner without needed to feed your child every bite by the time they are just over a year.

Usually by age 2 they can spoon feed themselves. I started giving them a spoon at age 1 and let them have like pudding or something and yes I knew there would be a huge mess, but they can't learn if they don't practice. Soon they get the spoon in the mouth and eat. I'm mom to 3.

I started letting them hold the spoon at about 10 months and helpign them get it into their mouth. At around a year they were using the spoon by themselves for the most part. Now at 18 months they use a spoon and fork themselves.

I used to be a nanny, and I can say that it depends on the kid... one was able to eat soup by himself at 14 months, and the other couldn't do it at 26 months... But most of them were able to feed themselfs by the age of two.
