Only if you are flying in. If you are driving you don't but make sure you have other forms of ID.

No, to get into Canada, you do not need a passport.

The confusion lies over the "enter or re-enter the USA" part of the WHTI.

For most tourists, which are American, this is confusing. I don't blame them. You see, you can go to Canada no problems with the right ID. BUT, if you are going home to the USA by air, that is where you have needed a passport to go home. ("re-enter" the USA) That is since January 23, 2007. By land and water the same applied January 2008.

That is the technical answer. But in normal talking to someone you would say yes because it is needed in the same trip if you are flying. :)

A U.S. citizen use to be able to get into Canada and Mexico on a birth certificate alone. However the law has changed and as of January 2007 U.S. citizens are now REQUIRED to have a passport to get into Canada and Mexico. Regardless of the fact if you are flying, driving or walking into the country, you DO need a passport.

Just recently the US decided that everyone needed a pass-
port to cross the borders. I don't know that you need the passport to get into Canada, but you need it to get back into the states. I believe the same applies to crossing into Mexico.
