Man! Eighty. That's pretty cool. Check out the era of when she would have been in her prime ... like maybe get her a book that was popular from the 1940's (found readily in almost any used bookstore ... ooo ... cancel that one. They'll be expensive, no doubt.) Ya know what ... just a card, home-made if you're in the mood ... and tell her how much your friend, her grandchild, means to you as a friend. That means more than gifts everytime, believe me. I'm getting old myself and if I got that from one of my grand-kids friends, I'd be "On top o' the world". Gifts don't mean so much as you get older. It really is the thought that counts.

How about a metal ? Or a book called, "How To Live To Be 100". Or a jar of Smuckers preserves with a card that you will purchase the jam of her choice every year until she can be on the Today Show for living to be 100.
Allow her to talk all during lunch about how she has made it to 80 years old. This is a nice gift since no one probably listens to her any more. Her husband is probably gone already so you could give her a free phone card for the elderly sex talk clubs. OR, you could give her cab fare every year on her birthday to go to the cemetery for a visit.
It is the small things that count when you are as elderly as she is. It doesn't have to be expensive to be heart felt. And these are all items she probably doesn't have.

a nice tea pot.......... china maybe... or tea cups... they are hard to find... but you might not want to spend to much.. 80 is kinda up there... or maybe make something... or give flowers..but everyone else might give flowers... you dont want to get any sweet things, she might be diabetic (I am too.. at the ripe age of 24) so that'd be a bad idea... you can only have so many...maybe a gift certificate for a store she might like... ask what she likes... maybe bath and bodyworks... or wal-mart... everyone loves wal-mart...a really really great idea would be to get some pictures and make some sort of photo album or something.. how far away is the party??? message me and I can tell you how to make a book of pictures if you can obtain them from your friend......

Home baking is always a good option. i bake for my fiance's grandma - hr favorite Gingerbread which she hasn't had in years. She freezes it in small squares and has it lasting for ages. She even sneaks out in the middle of the night to have a bite...A lovely thought by the way.

photos or a photo album is always a good idea for grandmas. my nan is obsessed with cadbury's chocolate so i always buy her chocolate and my great grandmother loves knitting so i buy her wool and knitting patterns. remember that the thing your grandma will love is you being there and remember to give her a kiss and a hug (even if the thought repulses you). she'll love it. good luck.

Either a lap blanket that she can put over her legs...everybody loves a 'bankie'
OR/And
A LIVE plant. One that doesn't need alot of attention but will bloom often....Maybe some begonias? Older women usually take a fondness for begonias. And they are easy and will keep coming back and blooming.
I just don't see giving anyone a handfull of dead flowers..
Yep, I live plant for sure.
Good luck ....and you are awesome just to be going!

A beautiful frame with a picture of her granddaughter in it. I also agree with the idea of flowers or small houseplant in a pretty pot.
A brooch would be nice too. If your friend can tell you if she has any collection, perhaps you could bring her something that would add to her collection.
Have fun!

My parents and in-laws are all in their 80's and 90's and there is one thing that never fails to please... SCRATCHCARDS!
They have everything they need, they can buy anything they want, so unless you know for sure that there is something that this lady wants or needs, get her a nice card and stuff some scratchies in it... if she wins big she can take YOU to lunch :)
