I've been waiting for someone to ask a question about fasting. I ABSOLUTELY love fasting. Especially for weight loss. Fasting also cures many diseases as well like cancer. Doctors suggest fasting to patients who refuses to under go chemotherapy and I totally agree with them. Ok let me give you a little synopsis of your body during a fast.
Ok on the first day there wont be too much of a difference until around dinner time and your body realizes that you haven't eaten anything...it will give you hunger pangs for about a half an hour and then they will subside. At the moment of subsidence you body turns to your stored fat to use for energy, the rest of the morning your body was eating off of undigested/unused carbs. At this moment you have begun your fast. The next 2 days will vary from person to person...but most people say that on day 3 is when they have the most hunger pangs ever...because your body is fighting to get you to consume carbs and sugars, because it likes to hold on to fat in case of emergencies. But if you just stay strong after day 3, your body will began ketosis. Which is the process of turning stored fat into ketones for energy. The good thing about this process is that it's a one way process, meaning that onces a fat cell is turned into a ketone, it can't turn back into fat, so any unused ketones will be excreted through the bladder.
Around about day 7-10, depending on if you are doing a water fast or juice fast, your body will be in the middle stage o d detoxification of your body, meaning cells in your body will be spewing out their toxins for the body to consume along with the ketones. This is how curing some cancers through fasting works, your body literally eats away your cancerous cells. You will experience fatigue a little bit, some people actually don't experience that at all. But either way your body is burning fat 24/7 during tihs fast.
As for the weight loss. The average person I've heard looses about 1-3lbs a day, depending on how overweight you are and some other variables. Now in the beginning most of the weight will just be water weight, because like i said, ketosis won't REALLY hit until after Day 3. But jsut drink lots of water and that will clear out that problem. As for me I fasted about 40 days and lost 55lbs. Thats the longest I've ever fasted for. I usually do like 14 day fast or 21 day fasts. But I've been doing fasts since last November and I went from 323lbs to 155lbs...which is what i weigh now.
So fasting is definitely a cure for obesity. There are just so many myths about it. before you fast though, I'd get a doctor to do some blood work to make sure you are ok to fast and aren't diabetic or have blood sugar problems because I've known a few people to pass out during a fast. I never have but I know it could happen. The most fays I think you should fast without doctors supervision is maybe 50 days. And thats on water...juice fasts are totally different, the body won't go into ketosis as hard as it would on water but you wont loose weight as fast(probably like 0.5-1.5lbs a day). So it depends on what you want. Hope that helps!
And about that whole muscle loss crap. The body DOES NOT consume muscle tissue until every single fat cell in your body has been consumed. That is another myth people made up about fasting. You body is not technically starving until it starts to consume it's vital tissues (aka: the heart, muscles, organs etc.) Yes your muscles may look smaller after you've been fasting for a few days but thats all because of detox. Like I said your body is forcing all the cells to spew out all their toxins to consume for energy. Which in turn makes the cells smaller because they aren't plumped up with toxins and the cells are healthier. And just use common sense, which provides more energy? Protein or Sugar? Sugar of course, sugar will make a kid hyper fasted than a protein shake would. So why would your body choose to eat your muscles when it has stored sugar through your body at it's disposal? It wouldn't!

No...not deliberately, but I was not wanting food two weeks ago for about 3 days.
In any case...muscle mass is lost BEFORE fat, so fasting is useless for weight loss...and just as useless for "cleansing" the body.
