try this sometimes turning off or locking the interweb will stop the problems like a freeze as its cleaning because the info is changing shutdown all open programs and exit the stuff on the tool bar or unplug the intenet conection first now before the defrag run the dick cleaner and in toolls before the disk cleaner do a delete on the history and the temp pages now the disk clean and then the defrag you may have a start-up system trojan they block cleaners andscanners that one thing also run the virus scan from trendmicro its free and then lock the interweb and do the steps to clean then save the clean computer in restore as clean day and then if it slows down in a week or mont just restore i clean religiously once a week and run outside scans like lava soft and spy-bot they are free

Look for a third-party application, I'm not kidding, but the Defrag only got to working on Winxp level, before that it's just a waste of time, you had to run it again and again.
If you're having problems with your C: drive, see if there is a boot-time scan option at all, that's the only time it can access the whole drive.

My brother has the same problem, it run for a while and then just stop. Mine does well. I wish my brother was close and I could check it out. What you may need to try is Scan Disk first and then try to Defrag.
Here how and the link I get it;
Keep in mind that if Windows 2000 and XP is a networking operating system and it's possible that the privileges to run scandisk may have been revoked by the system administrator. To run Scandisk we recommend you follow the recommend steps.
Double-click My Computer
Highlight a local hard disk drive by clicking on it once.
Right click the highlighted local drive
Click properties
Click the tools tab and click check now to check the drive for errors.
The computer will need to restart in order to run scandisk in a safe mode.

Yup he's correct..Run dxdiag and verify no rely if all your drivers are put in. and attempt to reinstall the hot ones. yet this wont remedy your concern. you're able to desire to enhance your OS. Get a loose Linux Distribution. Linux runs on low equipment requirement. Its exciting too.

You may have a bug in there that's disabling your system. Is your anti virus software still updating, or did it stop doing it?
If I was you, go to an online virus scanning program, such as Stop-Sign, to see if you're infected.
A virus does indeed overwrite your files, many of them disable your AV, so it won't be detected, worse, even will accelerate its spread.
Do it before your system becomes too unstable and may crash altogether.

Instead of giving you a complicated solution to fix your already inefficient program, lets replace it. Heres a free Disk Defragmentor : http://www.abexo.com/adldemo.exe
If you don't like that one just Google free disk deframentor.
