They are but it depends on your situation. We have had our personal Shepard since she was 6 weeks old, she is now almost 3. They are a big dog and need room for exercise and play. Sheba, our dog, likes to play and has a great kong drive (her favorite toy). However, they are very "pack" orientated and can be very protective of family members. I am the main caregiver so she is very protective of me and our children. I was watching a movie one night with my little girl and we fell asleep on the bed and when my husband came to bed the dog wouldn't allow him near it. Her barking woke me up and I had to crate her so he could come to bed. They are very protective and need to be socialized with people from an early age or they may have a harder time dealing with new people as they get older. Shepards are also prone to hip dysplasia, ours was just found a few months ago. This can be very expensive to treat and will become painful for the animal. We are lucky as to the fact that my husband was a K-9 cop and saw some early symptoms. We got her to the Vet quick and were able to get her on medication early. Her medicine runs us about $70 a month, not including her advantix or heartworm medicine. They can also get bloat, we've seen several Sheps die from this, it comes on quick and sometimes there isn't time to get them to a vet. I hope if you are interested in one that none of this has put you off. They are great pets and wonderful animals. I wouldn't trade ours for anything, she is a member of our family.

My best friend is a German Shepherd! A 120 lb. Shepherd and 5 years old.
They are great if raised from a puppy or coming from a home where you KNOW there has NOT been any abuse.
Females have a tendency to be a bit more aggressive (to unknown people or when they have pups). But the Shepherds I know of (especially mine) loves children. They are smart and very loyal dogs.
I even had a half shepherd that was smarter then any dog I've ever known. She knew sign language and could pick out a mean or evil person in a second, she died right at 11 years old, and I still miss her a lot.
Don't be fooled, the way you raise a dog and treat a dog has MORE to do with their temper and attitude then what a lot of people want you to believe. An old man once told me; " a person that will hurt an innocent animal is even a bigger threat to mankind."
Don't take my word on it though, research and maybe call a breeder, you'll get your best information there. But whatever you do, with ANY breed of dog, make sure your dog is not abused or has been abused, especially if you're going to have them around children. Most children are not taught how to treat animals, so they tend to abuse them and a previously abused dog may bite in defense.
Most ignorant people think it's funny to see their child pull their ears, tail, take their food or hit them, poke them or throw things at them (ghee whiz, I'd bite too!). These are the people who should learn to raise their children and should not own a pet.

Any dog can be a good dog as long as you raise it and train it the right way.
A better question is "is a German Shepherd a good dog for my situation?" They're big dogs, and they're active, so they need a yard where they can get a little bit of exercise. That's not enough though, you have to be an active enough person to play with it and take it on walks every day. German Shepherds need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, or they can become destructive. A bored dog is a bad dog.

its not true about german shephed dont even bite on children ? cause those breeds are train to be able protected youre family in case there if somebody going to harm youre love one . they are great dogs and always work for police officers who work with crimes and druggers and they do help the officers to keep in track with hideing drugs and weapons . also those dogs can use for finding missing children and person . plus theyre can aslo use to put them in the mitilary camps with the soldiers sometimes they will take the dogs with them during the war. so in case one of the soldier was shoted they can help the injurey soldier and take them in a safe place til someone come take them away. you know theyre smarter then other dogs who be trainned to take care of handscappes and blinds people who cant take care of themselves . cause my friend and her family own two larger german shephards theyre never harm anybody else berore .

My mother-in-law has one. They are very protective and like to play. She is a very good dog. If you get one make sure you do obedience training early on because they can be stubborn sometimes. They need a lot of play time. It is also a good idea to buy it a friend to play with when you are gone durring the day.

German sheps are reliable canines in case you have a good form of time to coach them. specific they are able to be obedient, yet they are actually not reliable first time canines. they're reliable for an experienced canines proprietor. they're very vocal. they are able to bark all day -some cases even while they're dreaming : ) (it is so lovable!) - grooming clever, they do shed plenty! and that i might propose applying a dremmel once you trim their nails (this is extra delicate). they're susceptible to hip issues yet maximum great breed canines are too. so final analysis, they're great canines for experienced proprietors, who do not strategies getting hair on their furnishings each and every now and then, and who love that they are vocal. prepare them while they're little the elementary obstacles (e.g., out of the kitchen, and don't enable them to get too rambunctious around babies)... reliable success -I actually have a sheppie and he or she has been a great pal/better half.

I think they're wonderful but I had one who had seizures and my vet (who was one of the vets on Animal Planets Emergency Vets program) told me that Shepards has the highest incidence of seizures of any breed. Usually they are able to control them with medication.
