I would like to keep the cost to a minimum if it all possible, but still get that jazzy sound. Would it be best to get a metal one or a special kind of plastic one? I have been playing for a five years now.

Try as many different mouthpieces as you possibly can. Whether a metal or a plastic one would be better is completely a matter of opinion. You have your own definition of what a "jazzy sound" is and it will be completely different from what I may think of a jazzy sound. I just bought a classical mouthpiece for my alto, and I took 1 month of hitting every music store and trying over 20 different mouthpieces to find the one I liked. It was one that no one had ever recommended but it gave me the sound I want. Go try them, and then you make a decision based on what YOU like, because you may like something completely different from everyone else.

The mouthpiece could really make the sound. Some good names in Jazz sax mouthpieces are Berg Larson, Otto Link, and selmer makes a metal jazz piece. The Metal Jazz mouthpieces can cost a lot so for an amatuer I would stick with the rubber ones. (they are cheaper). I think Vandoran makes a jazz mouthpiece but not sure what it sounds like. I play a Berg Larson.

The metal mouthpiece give you more bite or edge to your sound allowing your tone to cut through the sound of the ensemble easier. Basically it allows you to play softer and still be heard. If your just starting out in jazz you may want to hold off and concentrate on the style. Your not going to be able to get into a metal mouthpiece for under $100.

From the Woodwind and Brasswind Co.

Berg Larsen $159
Meyer Metal Jazz $139.00
Otto Link Metal $119.95
Otto Link New York Tenor $134.99
Runyon Quantum Metal $145.00

Selmer makes a great one but it costs $229.95 for a metal C star.

My recommendation is to go to your local music store and see what they have that you can try out. If you don't have a store near by you can order one on-line. Just make sure you're aware of the return policy. You really need to try them out for yourself. When you get the mouthpiece make sure to play it with a tuner in front of you to check intonation.
