iv'e read through the science text book but i cant use shock wave on my comp. so i cant figure it out...i think that they classify soils by texture and what its made out of but im not sure....i need more detail...

There are several standards available. Each country may vary in its use of standards.

For engineering purposes, the Unified Soil Classification System is the most widely used standard. It will break soils down to size of grains, type, softness, etc.
