I have a digital powershot s400 and the battery only lasts for about half an hour tops. Will a new battery help? How can i stop the same thing from happening to new battery?

The S400 is now almost 3 1/2 years old, so if you have had the camera for up to that amount of time, then the battery might just be at the end of it's life (depending on how many times it has been charged).
It's a fairly small battery, which doesn't provide you with a great amount of power (up to 190 shots) and my guess is, that you have had to recharge it many times.
If you make sure to fully charge the battery before you need to use the camera...and the battery still doesn't provide you with power for long, then perhaps you need to buy a new battery.
The battery you need for the S400 is...Canon NB-1LH 3.7v 840mAh lithium rechargeable battery pack.
good luck...

Try get 900mAh lithium rechargeable battery pack or higher. the higher the mAh the longer it last. dont get ordinary battery, it wont last long.

do not over charge your battery. use charger unit with switch off indicator when your battery is full.
