The answer is an unequivocal yes. This is on the assumption you are talking about the American military.

If anything, combat engineers spend more time outside the wire than your average grunt. In Iraq, combat engineers sweep the roads for IEDs. Those route clearance patrols are continuous, long, physically and mentally demanding, and extremely dangerous. They also engage in civilian infrastructure reconstruction projects and all sorts of tasks that take them past the wire on a regular basis. Some end up more or less permanently attached to an infantry unit, depending on the conditions at hand.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for combat engineers. And they don't get the "same training as regular soldiers"[sic]. Their tasks call for them to be proficient with explosives and heavy vehicles. That alone sets them apart from most of the rest. Demolitions pay is very well earned.

The concept of "frontline" is obselete in our current conflict. Engineers (like all other MOSs) are deployed to Iraq. The relative safety of a soldier can't really be determined solely on what type of job they hold because of the way the enemy has targeted US forces. If you are interested in joining the military you need to accept the fact that you most probably will be asked to put yourself in some dangerous situations. If its worth it to you, then you will still join.

Everyone in the Army is a solder first, no matter what MOS you have. You just might see combat in the engineers so get ready if you join.

yes you will. engineers fix tanks and other stuff. so you have to go where the tanks and stuff are. and the tanks and stuff are where the fighting is. so yes you will be exposed to combat situations and if thats to scary for you then join the air force as ground crew.

Not usually, but depending on the specific type of engineer, there may be occasions where one is needed (ie. demolition of a bldg or bridge for strategic reasons, etc.).
