Just as Jesus came to earth to speak to others about his heavenly Father,Jehovah and His heavenly Kingdom,we too as disciples of Christ "witness" to others about what we have learned about God and his purposes for mankind.
In obedience to Christ's command found at Matt.28:19,20 where Jesus tells his disciples to "go therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations,....."
In accord with Isaiah 43:10 where Jehovah refers to his people:"You are my witnesses,is the utterance of Jehovah,my servant who I have chosen..."
So we are servants of Almighty God,who have dedicated our lives to the doing of God's will and that includes that we go to people where ever they may be found and "witness" or talk to them about God,His Kingdom and the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the many blessing that it will bring upon obedient mankind.John17:3

They state that Jehova is The Most High, implying that Jesus is only the mesenger of Jehova, ignoring the fact that Jehova failed to build The Kingdom of Heaven on earth [read 1Sam.8:7-10] and also ignoring the fact that Jehova applied DOUBLE STANDARD, i.e. forbidding the killiing, yet ordering the Jews to kill every Amalech [1 Sam.15:3].
Until today, the people of Jehova are comfortably killing 'pagans' (of course according to their terms) in the middle east.
I don't worship deity with failures and applying double standards

They are wonderful people that have been going door to door for many years asking if you would like to understand the bible a little better . I turned them away for 20 years and then finally was open to their message a couple of years ago. I would say a better word than wittness would be messenger. God has a specific book that is given to us humans as an instruction manual, it's called the Bible.

They chose the name they have based on the following verse.

Darby version:
Isa 43:10 Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am HE: before me there was no *God formed, neither shall there be after me.

From the American Standard Version of the Bible:
Isa 43:10 Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
Isa 43:11 I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour.
Isa 43:12 I have declared, and I have saved, and I have showed; and there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and I am God.

They are God's only messenger on earth. The leaders are the ones that God talks to and then they bring what Jehovah says to the people. Hence the reason Jehovah Witnesses cannot read any Bible or literature other than what the leaders gave. Brain washed to the highest.

A witness is one who gives testimony about what he has seen and heard.

I suppose that a Jehovah's Witness, by the definition of the term, is implying that he has experienced God in a way that none of the rest of us have, and they are here to tell us about it.

the concept of witness is used both in the sense of witness to ascertainable facts and also in that of witness to truths. i.e the making known and confessing of convictions. So a witness relates facts from direct personal knowledge or he proclaims views or truths of which he is convinced.
