Isshinryu was developed by master Tatsou Shimabuku in 1965. The name means " One Heart One Mind Way. Master Shimabuku was accomplished in the study of Goju-ryu Karate and Shorin-ryu Karate. He was also renowned for his strength and and sparing skills. Isshinryu is distinct from other style of Karate because of it's emphasis on power full straight snapping techniques that are easy and quick to deliver to vulnerable targets. The most prominent difference is the vertical punch. Where an Isshinryu striker gets much of their power.

This art was founded in Okinawa and traces its orgins back to the days of the samurai.
