Yes it is very normal. I had to put my beloved Rosie age 14 down in 2003. She was my very best friend ever. I believe her spirit is always with me and one day I'll see her again and we'll go on our daily 3 mile walk up in the sky. Just remember that you are blessed to have had her for the short 16.5 years than to not have had her at all. We can never replace our beloved pets but we can get a new one to love . I adopted a new dog at the shelter with many of Rosie's characteristics who is named Lily .I truly believe that Rosie had a "paw" in it.

Yes, it is normal. She was a big part of your life. I still miss a dog that died over 10 years ago, she was a very big part of my life, 15 years. You will always miss her, but don't dwell on the fact that she is gone, be thankful for the time you were together.
Cheer yourself up, go to an animal shelter, play with the dogs there and remember her. Just don't get another dog til you are ready and you will know when.

It's not weird to me. I've lost several dogs during life. I lost one of my best dogs six years ago and I still mourn her. She was the smartest and most beautiful dog I ever owned. Her pictures still hang on my wall. I do have more dogs now, but she'll never be replaced. I loved and love all my dogs in different ways, they are like family, different personalities and attitudes;I had one the even smiled!
Mourn your dog as much as you need to, don't let anyone tell you different. This is your pain, not theirs. But just like me, you have another friend that is looking for your love and support too, so don't cut them short. Remember your old friend, but make some new memories as well. Best of luck to you!

Grief is normal when you lose a special pet. Everyone takes their own time in working through their emotions.
On Grief:
"Grief is itself a med'cine" -William Cowper
"No one ever told me that frief felt so like fear." -C.S. Lewis
"There is no grief which time does not lessen." Latin Proverb
On the Lose of a Pet
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... "

I think when you have a meaningful relationship whether it be a human or an animal I think it is normal to miss it. What you are missing is the good times that you spent together. I think sometimes people believe that just because it was an animal you should not miss it. Why wouldn't someone miss another who loved him unconditionally? I hope what I am saying makes sense.

I wouldn't describe your behavior as weird, and you shouldn't feel uncomfortable thinking about your canine buddy after all the years you spent together. Having said that, if you are preoccupied and unable to accept her passing, you might need some assistance in working through your grief and loss. There are numerous websites that can be used as a starting point. I lost my dog to cancer in January and I have never felt a loss more deeply. We all have different bonds with our animals so if you seek advice from an outside source, please seek someone who can understand the depth of your loss and won't minimize your devastation. Good luck.

It is so normal. She was a big part of your life and you just don't forget about things like that. She was a friend and you would still miss your people friend after only a year.
You must've done a great job if she lived that long!

I can really relate to your situation. The police shot and killed my dog and he had just turned 1yrs old the week before. I still mourn for him. I can't have kids and that's all I had. He also had a brother I took care of and had to let him go because the people who took care of him starved him and it was alot of work. I feel responsible for letting him go, but I know he's in a better place (with his brother). Stay strong!!! Keep her memories alive.

Yeah, unless you find yourself obsessed about. It is hard to get over losing someone who provided you with unconditional love especially for such a long time. She was with you for a very big part of your life. It wouldn't be normal for you to forget about her very easily. But you will eventually move on, will have a new puppy who will never be the same, never take her place but you will love just the same.. You will always have fond memories of the girl you lost.

Please be sure you new little guy is on a good food. This pet food recall could easily happen again because of the poor regulations on pet food. You can find a store that would help you by going to www.natura.com and www.canidae.com.
I am sorry for your lose my cat was 17 when he died and that was 2 years ago. I still miss him!
