There are a few varietals that are sweet. The top of my list is Gewurtstraminer (Meridian Gewurtstraminer). Second is Johannesberg Reisling (Geyser Peak Soft Reisling is really good). Third is Chenin Blanc (Beringer Chenin Blanc).
Look for bottles of wine that come in a "German Hock" shaped bottle. They are tall and skinny, not like a bottle of Chardonnay or Merlot. You'll see the difference in bottle shapes. Go to a grocery stores and look in the miscellanious white wine section (Sauvignon Blanc, White Zinfandel, Fume Blanc, etc.) you'll see the bottles I'm reffering to.

If the recipe calls for a dry white wine, the taste is not going to be the same - And if a recipe doesn't refer to the wine being sweet or dry - they usually mean dry. The type of recipe will also tip you off. You never typically do not cook meat with anything other than a dry wine.

Johanessburg Reisling by Robert Mondavi. Try it! Not as sweet as, let's say, a dessert wine or Moscato, but, sweet and very, very good. Also, not too expensive at $10 a bottle.

reislings tend to be sweet, but if you are looking for just SWEET, try a white table wine. The bottle will say "table wine". Depending on the area you live in you may be able to get Finger Lakes wines and if you can....get Wagner's "Niagara", Fox Run "Artic Fox", or Hazlitt's "White Stag".

Another excellent sweet white wine from the finger lakes region of NY (EXCELLENT place to get wine, if you are lucky enough to live in a state that will allow you to ship it in....grrrr [I'm not]), in addition to the Niagra from Wagners is the Niagra from Glenora (8.99 a bottle).

riunte bianco is a sweet white wine that is easy on the pocketbook. and if that's too sweet try their d'oro. that's a bit drier, but, still sweet.
asti spumante is a fun sweet white bubbly.
