The Abomination of Desolation is no other than Satan himself, who is to return BEFORE the true Christ, and who will come in disguised as Christ, pretending to be Christ, and professing that he is Christ.
When he attempts to seat himself in Jerusalem as king, the true Christ returns.
One of the names of Antichrist is "desolator". The mass majority of the worlds peoples will believe he is the Christ, and it will be the biggest religious tent revival of all time. The stage is well set for this event.

There are many modern day disgusting things but that which causes desolation most surely are those that enter a temple with impure motives.....ie....those that claim Christ but know him not.

I believe the correct term is " the abomination that causes desolation. That is just referring to Satan when he comes claiming to be Jesus. he comes by many names. I will name a few. I hope you you will overlook the spellings. Snake, serpent, Beelzebub, Lucifer ,abobdon, apollion, wicked one, devil . there are more.

It was the Roman Eagle being taken into the temple. I wouldn't look for a "modern day disgusting thing".
