a friend of mine takes his dog in for regular grooming( hair, nails, etc), the other day he has me drop her off for him with specific instructions, one of which was to "drain her anal gland". my question is is this normal? necessary? recommended? he says she(his shitzu mix dog) feels great. i have a miniature chi wa and want to know if any one knows what this involves and is it something i should consider having done to my baby?

Yes, this is actually a very good idea for your dog. Some common problems with anal sacs (glands) are infections, obstruction, overfilling (called impaction), and rupture. This can be avoided by draining them.
