Ignore the above responce....
Sure LA has bad areas but it is nothing like the media makes it out to be. LA has heaps of safe areas and you can never run out of things to do in LA.
Firstly a good place to stay would be: Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills or Orange County
Here are some things you can do:
Rodeo Drive/Beverly Hills
Sunset Boulevard
Hollywood and Highland
Walk of Fame
Universal Studios
Movie Star Home Tour
Beaches: Santa Monica, Venice, Newport, Huntington etc
Santa Monica area and pier
Disneyland
Shopping at South Coast Plaza
Knotts Berry Farm
Hollywood Sign/Mullholland Drive
Downtown LA Shopping

I can't agree more than nick_someone. Yes LA has a high crime rate, and some of the places are rather dodgy, but there are a lot of things that you can do there. First of all, LA is the home of Hollywood, so go and look for it. Stroll along the Walk of Fame, stop by at the Graumannn Chinese Theatre and many more. You can go to all the places listed by nick_someone if you have the time, they are all worth it.
