okay, so im just getting into the whole "dining out" thing. the thing that really confuses me is when your waiter/waitress brings you your check, how do you know theyre going to be back to get it and process it in the back somewhere, or you have to go up to a cashier yourself?

Depends on the restaurant. Most causal family style places you take your check to the cashier. Upper end places bring you a check on a little tray. Place your cash or credit card on the tray. Server will be back to get it and process your check return with your change or credit card. Important..in these days when it's so easy to become a victim of fraud, it's not a good idea to let your credit card out of your sight anywhere.

Watch the people around you when they get their check. If they pick it up then they are going somewhere to pay the bill. Most of the time the waiter/waitress will let you know that they will take care of that when you are ready.

When she brings you the check, you ask her if you should pay at the table or at the cashier.
However if she brings it on a little tray, then you know you pay at the table: you either put the money with a minimum 14% tip in the tray, or you put your credit card in it. She'll take it from there.

When you go into a resturant, notice if there is a register up front. If so, you will probably pay as you go out. Most of the time they will bring check to the table, wait a bit then pick up your money. It is normal to add their tip then.
