Our daughter is having boys and girls at the party and it is a "princess" theme at a gymnastics place. I don't mind having different gifts for the boys and girls. I just hate to give or get junk but want to keep it reasonable money-wise.

I just took my daughters to her friends 5th birthday...The goody bag she got was a little pocketbook with a fun pad, play-dough, bubbles, pack of sugarless gum and a sport bottle. The boys got a bucket with a shovel, bubbles, play-dough, pack of sugarless gum, and a sport bottle. my daughter loved it and is still playing with it now a month later.

Gender themed parties can have the effect of stigmatizing the group that the party is not themed for. I think you have a really great opportunity to effectively make the themed party a great, collective experience for both the boys and the girls. I would go with some kind of knight or prince theme for the guys. Badges for chivalry, toy dragons and even shields and armor might go along with the "princess" theme, along with crowns and scepters. Try to include everyone in on the groups activities, even the goodie bags, so no one feels left out.

BUBBLES
the kind with the safety lid (where they wont spill even ifyou tip them all the way over!) I have seen them at walmart and they are a bit less than a buck apiece. If that is too expensive (i am sure you are going to spend a mint renting the gym) regular bubbles would be a fine parting gift too but just be sure to hand them out at the end of the session so that they can deal with them when they get home.
Sidewalk chalk would be another nice party favor that the girls would probably enjoy.
Maybe a small matchbox car for a boy.
Some parents are going to hate me for this one but I have seen party packs of playdoh that would make for a nice parting gift too.
If you have a target store near you go there and look on all of the clearence racks. They have discounted stuff on the end caps.
I have found crayons and coloring books for .25 cents apiece, last week I found a 'sesame and me' book it had been $25.00 and it was discounted to $5.25. I have also seen these books on ebay for about that price or lower. The neat thing about the book is that the child's picture is taken and sent to the company and then the child becomes a super hero and his or her face is on a puppet body in the story next to elmo(hard to explain, go to the website for more info www.creationsbyyou.com)...I would think that you might be able to buy them in bulk for about $3.50 apiece and it would be a gift that they would remember for years to come!)
I have seen jack sets and lighted necklaces in the party favor isle at target. The lighted necklaces were a huge hit (we went to the skating rink) and they were less than $10 bucks for the bulk sack! I went to the dollar store for xmas and found BOOKS on CD for kids ($1.00) they had the emporer's new clothes, snow white, etc. They were board books with a cd. Those would be awesome and I got a few of them for my nephew for long car rides. EVERY mother would appreciate that!

Not sure how far away the party is.....
Ebay might have some great deals if you have time for the mail to run.
I hope your daughter has a blast at the party!

We did goodie bags that were the same for the boys and girls for our 4 year olds party: bubbles (the kind you blow), stickers, small pack of plain m&m's, super ball, crayons with smalls pads of paper. I got most of it at the Dollar Tree store, some of it was 2/$1 or 3/$1. I bought the little plastic goodie bags there, too. Since Easter is coming up soon they have loads of candy, you get a big package of individual treats for $1.

I just did my one yr old and she had her cousins there we had children ranging in age from 11 months to 7 yrs old. We did age and gender specific toys. All the parents loved them. What I did was I went the the dollar store and found some great toys there. Then I went to supper walmart and got some fruit roll ups so the the kids were happy and it was not total junk food. I had Eco microphones for the sm children and some match box cars with racing stop pit parts for the older boys and the girls got dolls that had multiple outfits to change them in for dress up. I had the small kites in there and the typical party favorites. The little maze and some card games. I also put stickers in there. I then put each in a gift bag and put the child's name on it so they knew who it was for. I had 10 children and spent $30. for wrapping and all. You can find good stuff at the dollar stores you just need to know what to look for.

My daughter is 3 and went to a party this past Saturday at MyGym. The goodie bags consisted of:

Blue's Clues and/or Dora fruit snacks
Keebler pretzel & cheese snacks
a small pad
a light up pen
a candy necklace
a small pink soccerball (about 4 inches in diameter)
and a bottle of bubbles

How about personalized books? Kids love to hear their name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Batman, Spider-Man, Ballerina Princess, Dinosaur Land, Sesame Street, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful & unique gift... Good Luck!

For my girls parties, since they are usually the boy/girl attendees, we get temporary tattoos, we get a small funpad and small set of crayons, we do wild plastic rings, we've put small bottles of bubbles in the bags, we've put small games, or sunglasses, we've done pencils, small note pads, we've put small stamper sets in, for the boys, little plastic cars, the girls little hair bows, for the girls barbie makeup, non toxic, stuff...for the boys eye patches..plastic..The best thing to do is look at the party section of like Kmart or Walmart, or your local party supply store. We don't spend alot but everyone always enjoys the bags. My daughters are 5 and 6.

Go to OrientalTrader.com... you can get tons of goodie-bag toys there in bulk on the cheap!

Also, small boxes of crayons and little coloring books... if you're looking at a budget, you can make templates for coloring book 'pages' on your computer and print them out and make the books yourself.

I'm sure the kids will have fun regardless of what the goodie bag's like.
