As a nation at war, we are having problems filling the ranks of our armed forces, especially the Army and the Marine Corps. Is the all volunteer force the way to go, or should there be a mandated service for everyone? Not just military, but some kind of public service(Peace Corps, Firefighting, etc.,)

These day's people are afraid to defend our country is the reason there is a problem filling the needs of the Army and Marine's because they both have a fairly hard basic training where as the others are fairly easy, the kids now days want's everything easy for them and most of them thing that joining a volunterry military they can't be deployeed, I think what would help with reducing all the cimes we have here is that it should be manditory for all kid's getting out of school to serve at least 2 years in some kind of military ( National Guard or Active) which would help to show them how to be human instead of animals.

Personally, I feel there should be a mandatory service requirement for both males and females. This can either be in the military or something akin to the Peace Corps or some other auxillary type service that assists the military in a non combatant form. This would free our regular military personnel to be used in combat units.
I also think we should withdraw our forces from Europe for deployment to Iraq and Afganistan.
The other equation is to provide better pay and benefit incentives and keep the promises made to Veterans so that today's active duty personnel will feel their country appreciates their sacrifices.

I think mandatory service to one's nation gives the individual a deeper appreciation for the freedoms that too many take for granted. It wouldn't demand much. Maybe 9 months to a year.

mandatory service wouldn't hurt the military that much because people are still volunteering. I'm 18 and I wouldn't really be opposed to it on a personal level.
However the draft is a method to impose the cost of going to the military on the draftees. Without a draft, the cost is spread much better and I'd say its a lot more equitable because it is used to benefit all (and the cost to the economy as a whole is the same). ummm I should probably explain further but I'm too tired, if you're interested in the economics of it contact me.

I don't know if mandatory service is a good idea on any level. One, because this is a free country... and two there would be dumbasses getting into the military who probably would go nuts and kill American soldiers or something... then you have the cry babies who can't handle it. I think if anything there should be a mandatory blood test at birth, where your DNA is stored so we could get crime off the streets easier... just imagine how easy it would be to find the mother who just killed 3 of her children at birth

A volunteer service gets you better soldiers, marines, sailors, & air men, but I do think that there should be a manditory time of service for all americans at the age of 18, Even if its 2 years. Let me tell you it did me a lot of good.

I think they need to bring back the draft. I also believe that anyone who drops out of school should be sent to the military for a minimum of 4 years. If you graduate, then you serve at least 2 years. In some countries, all people serve their country. No matter if you're rich or poor, you enter the military.
Our young people today have no direction. They drop out of school, join gangs, kill each other over drugs and other nonsense.

volunteer military weeds out the cry babies and others who are NOT ready or should have never been there. the last thing that any soldier needs on the battlefeild is another soldier crying about how he wants to go home or how he doesnt want to do his/her job.

i liked the idea about making the kids who drop out of highschool go to the army but i would only be contradicting myself if i supported it. it would make kids stay in school and even better help those who do decide to drop out become more of a MAN or WOMAN .
