Depends on the cockatoo...there are many different types. If you measure from head to tail, they can measure from 8 inches to a little over a foot. Their bodies 6-8 inches depending on the breed of cockatoo.
Cockatiels are MUCH smaller...don't get them mixed up!
I recommend you yahoo search cockatoos and you will be able to see them for yourself and get more info. Your local petstore might have them too.
They are VERY fragile and emotional birds. So if you are considering getting one, DO YOUR RESEARCH and I would actually reconsider it. Large parrots go through hormonal changes, are like having a kid in its terrible two's its whole life, live over 50 years, LOUD, and messy... They are very time demanding too.
I have a macaw and if I knew then what I know now...I might not have gotten her! And my grandma has 13 parrots and says the same thing.
So do your research so you are not living with any regrets.

Well, let's see.
We'll start from the biggest and go down the list.
Moluccan's are the biggest. They are comparable in size to a macaw except without the tail feathers.
Umbrella's are about 12 inches? I'm looking at Oscar, our Umbrella and I'd say he's about 12 inches. Not huge, but not small either. His beak is like a scalpel, and I know that from personal experience.
Sulpher Cresteds are about the same, maybe a little skinnier. There are a few sizes of those, but in general, they're between 9-12 inches.
Goffins are quite a bit smaller, about the size of a medium sized conure, with a bigger head. Those guys can be evil. By evil, I mean they can rip you apart, they have a constant napoleon complex going on, and if you hint at boring them, they rip all their feathers off, causing them to look like little crested chickens. I just taught a class this last weekend on feather picking, and Diablo the Goffin's was our poster child for the class.
And shall we not forget Cockatiels, which are actually cockatoo's, just on a much smaller, less viscious scale. They're a quite a bit bigger than a budgie, but quite a bit smaller than say say...a conure. They are also much more manageable.
There are more cockatoo's than that, like Bare Eye's, Black Palm, and all of those, but the liklihood of you laying down that type of money for a bird when you're asking the size of a cockatoo is pretty small (no offense, but you'll probably not lay out over 5 grand for a bird...right?).
So...hope that helped!
