I have a 6 yr. old Chihuahua. One year ago the vet removed a bunch of teeth, but the bad breath is back worse than ever. It is almost as if removing the teeth helped none at all. His breath is really bad and brushing the teeth and the mouth wash prescribed by the vet does no good.

Welcome to the world of Chihuahuas. Even the younger dogs 1 yr old and up get bad breath. I attribute a good deal of it to the food. Try a natural dog food without alot of preservatives. Also after he eats check his 'cheeks' near his back teeth area for stored food. This chewed up paste gums up and begins to breakdown with the enzymes in the dog's mouth and causes odor. It is almost like rotting dog food smell.
You can also get small breath mints like BreathAssure for dogs at stores PetSmart, Petland to try if you can get him to take them like a treat.
The teeth are always the likely culpret but if the vet checked then that is not the problem. This means it is coming from deeper in the digestive track. By some chance did your vet do complete bloodwork. many health problems can cause bad breath.
I took my Chihuahua to a very educated vet to have his teeth cleaned and some removed. She smelled his breath and said that he was dehydrated due to infection possibly in the kidneys and that he could have an enlarged prostate. She ordered a CBC bloodwork test which confirmed his kidney infection and manually checked his prostrate whiched was enlarged and he needed neutered. She said that she knew by the particular odors of his breath what the possible problems were and the tests confirmed it after the fact.
Ask the vet to do the extensive bloodwork and check that all of his levels are within normal range.

When was the last time the 'doc' saw her? If it has been awhile, I'd take her in again to have her looked at, since she may have develoed a cavity or abcess that wasn't noticible on her last visit. Was her breath bad when she saw him last? You say she "drinks like a fish". Does she have any problems with urinating frequently? Sometimes a diabetes can cause a blood sugar imbalance where a symptom is bad breath. Did the vet check for that? If it was bad when he last saw her, and that visit was recent, and the vet checked for diabetes, I can only recommend commercial doggy breath products. Keep brushing her teeth,as that is a good practice to prevent tooth decay and loss, and might be helping some with the breath problems. Good luck!

Many things cause bad breath. Many sources come from the stomach. What type of food are you feeding him? If brushing does not work, you may need to have dental work done. Your vet office will do that. They basically do the same thing your dentist does to you and cleans their teeth.
There are bones and treats that are made to deter bad breath and I would look into the diet you feed your dog.
Your vet should be a good source for help with this also.

Many things cause bad breath. Kidney or liver disease, for example, best to get a blood test. Also small dogs have a different type of bacteria in their mouths that cause gum and tooth decay, more so than large dogs. His teeth or gums could be causing the smell again, the teeth could have gotten worse since the dental (I must give my pet a dental every year.)

Chihuahuas need there teeth brushed once a day with water, they are extremely prone to teeth problems. If it has bad breath, it probably has dental disease. Take it to the vet before it's to late..

My 6yr old Chihuahua has the same problem. We've tried brushing his teeth, the special dental bones to help with bad breath, upgraded to a better dog food. Nothing seems to work. Just had a visit to the vet the only thing they could find wrong was a few ear mites.
If you find the answer for this please, please let me know. He sleeps with me on my pillow and I am tired of waking up with doggy breath in my nose every morning.

if there is a lot of yellow on the teeth they need to be cleaned again. sometimes the smell is due to infection. something else to consider...often small dogs are sensitive and if they have an upset stomach it can also cause bad breath. Example ....5lb poodle...when we hear that her stomach is rolling or gurgling a lot we know she's uspet or stressed in some way and her breath always stinks then.

have you looked into the food. If you buy it cheap food like bottome line food that will cause that. You need to buy a higher name brand type of food. It may have worms too in the stomach. alot of time the bad breath odor comes from their stomaches and colon
