First of all, it will depends on whether it is an upper wisdom tooth, or lower wisdom tooth.
If it is a wisdom tooth in the upper arch, we will give you some anaesthetic agent using infiltration technique, where we injected directly at the root(s) of that tooth. If it is a lower wisdom tooth, we will use nerve block technique, where we will give the local anaesthetic agent at the left/right inferior alveolar nerve and also the lingual nerve, which mean more deep inside your mouth, far from that tooth, before that nerve branches into smaller nerve. With this technique, the half of your tongue and lip will be numbed too. Besides that, we will add another injection at the root at that tooth, to another nerve (buccal nerve).
The local anaesthetic agent act by blocking the transmission of the impulse, which means it block the delivery of the information at the nerve. That's why you will lost sensation at that area temporary.
To get a wisdom tooth out, will depends on it's position, whether it's fully erupted, or it's partially erupted, or evn not erupted yet at all(fully impeded in side the bone). If it's erupted, and the direction of removal of that tooth is not block by the adjacent tooth, then we will only do simple extraction, which mean we will loosen it with an elevator, and pull it out with a suitable forcep.
But if it's impacted, we will perform minor oral surgery, where we might have to open a flap at the gum, remove some surounding bone, devides the teeth into 2, 3 pieces, and remove them out, followed by smoothening the bone edges, wash the wound, and finally suring the wound.

They numb them with novacaine. Once the novacaine block sets in, you can't feel anything. Sometimes with wisdom teeth, they will also give you nitrous oxide gas or completely put you to sleep, too. Depends on the situation.
