The others have told you where to get them and what's required.

However, I'd like to add that you aren't required to have one in September if you are going on a cruise out of the US and ended back into the US - HOWEVER, you ARE required to have a state certified copy of your birth certificate. The requirement of a Passport to travel by sea (cruise) goes into effect in January, 2008. You are still able to us a copy of your birth certificate for travel if traveling by sea (cruise) until January. It is recommended that you have a Passport over birth certificate (and in my experience watching those with birth certificates, it's a lot easier getting through Immigration) but not required yet, so don't fret if you don't get one by then thinking you can't go on the cruise. But I would highly recommend you get one.

You go to your local post office, bring a birth certificate an a gov't ID. But please know that when they send out the application, they hold onto your birth certificate, and send it with your application, so make sure you aren't going to need it in the 8 weeks it will take to process the Passport. It costs about 80-100 bucks. I just did mine a few weeks ago. It was a pretty easy process. They take the pics of your right there for about 15 dollars extra. The pic they took of me was a LOT nicer than the one I took at walgreens, so I ended up using the one they took of me instead. LoL.. And its good your getting a passport now, instead of waiting and havng it expediting (an extra 60 bucks). You don't need a passport yet for Cruise travel, but its SO much easier, thats why we got ours expedited for the cruise we are going on in 3 weeks. Esp. If you miss the boat, you have no way of gettng back to US!

Contact the state or local government for a passport. It usually takes about 8 weeks if you do it by mail but you may be able to hand deliver the application. It cost more but you can get it usually in about a day. Check out the website referenced. It will have the information you need.

you can apply at the post office. go soon so you don't have to pay a fee to get it expedited (sent faster). you have to get pictures taken for your passport, so you can either get them taken at a drugstore such as walgreens, or get them taken at the post office. it is cheaper at walgreens though
