toothpastes are sold in paste form and gel form...why is there that choice? Is one just suppose to be smoother than the other?

According to my dentist, the difference is paste has more abrasive cleaners than gels. Gels achieve a more "mouth rinse" effect. Although both serve the same purpose as far as plaque removal, fluoridation, cavity prevention, etc.

Plus, some people are sensitive to "texture" and prefer one over the other.
